Happy birthday, sweet baby.
Happy birthday, sweet baby.
I won't go into the impact this sweet spirit has had on my life, other than to say I am infinitely a better person because she has taught me how to be.
Lizzy woke up the morning of her birthday so excited that today was her big day. Since her big present, Winston, isn't ready to come home for a few more weeks, we went ahead and got her a nice easel for her to have a present to open, and had set it up in the basement. She went downstairs and instantly started playing and drawing on it.
We went to run some errands, and then Gay and Ed came over to bring presents and join us for birthday dinner. Lizzy had requested we eat at Izakaya for her birthday, so we were happy to oblige. She loves it there!

We had a garage sale today, and she was my eager little helper, helping give change and write down whenever anyone bought anything.
Before the sale began, Lizzy for some reason grabbed some silly sales book from our sale table, and had taken it into the garage, to sit in her camp chair and "read it."
Later in the day, some small children came to the garage sale and were playing with some of her toys while their mothers browsed.
After they left, Lizzy told me she was going to go hide her favorite toys upstairs so no other kids would find them. She went inside and came back out a few moments later, so I didn't give it much additional thought.
After the sale had ended, we set up a sprinkler Gay and Ed had gotten her for her birthday, and had a delightful sprinkler battle once she figured out she could point the sprayers at unsuspecting victims.

In the evening, I went upstairs to use one of the bathrooms. Imagine my surprise to find the sales book among her "favorite toys" that she had hidden earlier in the day.

Today was birthday party day! The day started with Daddy taking her to swim class while I continued to man the garage sale.
Today was birthday party day! The day started with Daddy taking her to swim class while I continued to man the garage sale.
After swim class, Lizzy and Daddy went to pick up her birthday cake, and then came home while we took down the garage sale. Then, it was off to her party!
She had such a tremendous time, and was so excited her best friend from preschool was there. In the photo below where she's leading the line of children, there was a delay while they waited for one of the party rooms to clear out.
As she stood there, she said, in her Hulk voice, "Hulk hates delays!" Funny, funny girl.

We came home and unloaded all of her presents, when it started to rain cats and dogs. She took one of her favorite presents, a Ninja Turtles chair from her Great Aunt Monica and Great Uncle Kelvin, and moved it out to the porch to watch the rain. However, the temptation to play in it was too great, and she had to go run through it.
After getting all dried off and changed, we played with some more of her awesome gifts. Once the driveway had dried off, we used the chalk paint my friend Janet and her girls had brought for Lizzy. This stuff is INCREDIBLE!

Back on Cinco de Mayo, she had asked me if we could have dinner on the outside patio of our local Mexican restaurant. It was so very busy that I had promised her that on the next sunny day after I picked her up from school, I would. She LOVED it, and finished an entire strawberry daiquiri mix drink.

At school, they had made a "When I Grow Up" book. Here are some of the highlights:

On a whim, we and the Lewises went to the children's museum for a few hours. I love these three silly kiddos! Lizzy said "Naveen is my real friend. He gave me high fives on my birthday."
Everyone really enjoyed the new Hot Wheels exhibit too. It was a super fun day!

Lizzy brought home lots of stuff from preschool today, since the end of the school year is drawing near. One of those things was a drawing of herself from the first day of school, and then the same page updated with a self-portrait from today.

Additionally, she brought home a journal from each of her classrooms. In one, she had drawn a picture of her and her Mommy (with our matching brown hair), and written and drawn out why she loves her Daddy.

Lizzy invented a new word this morning - "Exhausterated."
She said it means when you're both exhausted and frustrated. I like it!
Today was her last day of preschool, so I was able to join her for the last day picnic and celebration. What a perfect day for it!

We had an incredible night. The sky was cloudless, and my small astronomer was excited to see Venus and Jupiter shining so brightly. We grabbed a blanket and went to sit outside. She spotted Saturn, and we spotted and identified dozens of other stars together. What a magical memory.

Lizzy's last swim class was today. She's become the best swimmer in her class! Check out her kicks and paddles!
After swim class, we headed home to get changed and collect Daddy. It was a spectacularly beautiful day, so Lizzy wanted to sit outside and eat. With this suggestion in mind, we had a delightful lunch at Bella Vita.

Afterwards, we had some time to kill before our first party of the day, so we got her first pedicure!
After staying up so late the night before, and getting up early for swim class, I knew she'd need a nap at some point. She fell asleep on the way to our first party, and then slept for nearly two hours outside. With the beautiful breeze, she was so comfortable!
Once she awoke, we walked down to Morse, had some food, played with dogs, and bubbles. It was a wonderful time!
Afterwards, we headed over to our second party. There was swimming, music, hot tub fun, and a lovely dinner. What a perfect day!

Firstly, she was so excited to see these Ninja Turtle cutouts advertising the TMNT exhibit that opens this autumn.
Lizzy's favorite part of the Children's Museum is the Dinosphere - and we literally had the ENTIRE Dinosphere to ourselves. There was no one else in there but her and I - and it was awesome! We spent about 45 minutes in there.
With a bit of time left, we headed up to ride the carousel and do some science play before we got kicked out :o)
We arrived home to find most of our supplies for Winston had arrived. We're so ready for him to come home next week!

We'd had such a fun time at the Children's Museum the day prior, we decided to head back a second day in a row. We started our day with breakfast at IHOP, then arrived at the Museum shortly after opening. Once again, it seemed that every area of the museum we went to, we had to ourselves!

We decided to hit some new areas of the museum we hadn't visited before. We ended up in the discover China area for about 90 minutes - she loved it! We had (very serious) tea together, and then she served me about a dozen times in the Chinese restaurant.
We also did the Hollywood area, and had some green screen fun. Super Lizzy!
After four solid hours of exploration and fun, we headed out to go to Lizzy's favorite restaurant for late lunch/early dinner.

As is our annual tradition, we went to the June Jamboree. After having a picnic under a tree, as last year (LIzzy's suggestion), we hit the rides. First, she did the spinning dragons. Then, the Hawaiian vans. Then, the fun house.
Oh, the fun house. She loved the booby traps throughout. She had 44 tickets. She rode the dragons once (4 tickets), the vans twice (8 tickets), and used her remaining 32 tickets on EIGHT TRIPS THROUGH THE FUN HOUSE! I went once with her, Gay went one, and Ed went six times :o)

A huge day for our family. It was time to bring home Winston!
We drove 2.5 hours to Northern Indiana, and met our sweet boy. He was overwhelmingly perfect! The breeder did a brief orientation for us, and then we were on our way. He ended up sleeping most of the car ride home.

Once Lizzy got up, it was all I could do to get her dressed, to potty, and brush her teeth before she wanted to take him outside and play. These two are going to grow up together and be best buddies.
It was a wonderful day. No accidents in the house. He slept all night in his crate, only whining once around 2:00 am to go potty. What an awesome dog we have!

Daddy decided we needed an ice cream treat. Yummo!

Daddy had plans to go boating with some friends, so Lizzy and I were going to go swimming, but the weather wasn't very sunny, so instead we went to the Children's Museum. Unfortunately, it seems the rest of Central Indiana had the same idea.
The last few times she and I have gone, we've had what felt like the entire museum to ourselves. This was the first time she'd had to wait long for the carousel, and you can tell from the look on her face she wasn't thrilled about it.

At long last, we were FINALLY able to take Lizzy to the observatory. It had been so overcast and rainy on Friday and Saturday nights lately, that we jumped at the chance for a partly cloudy sky.
She was so excited to arrive!
She was so excited to arrive!
Once we entered, we were led to the planetarium for the educational portion of the evening. There was an informational slide show with questions. Lizzy knew so many answers! Which is the closest planet to the sun? That was an easy one for her. What are the rings of Saturn made of? She knew it was ice. She was answering questions that some adults didn't even know.
The educational portion was about Saturn, which was fascinating, and timely as that was the planet we would have a chance to view that evening.
The main telescope, the largest in Indiana, is currently undergoing a refurbishment. So, we got to see the telescope up in the observatory dome, but not look through it. Lizzy did get to spin the motorized dome, though!
The hosts set up an amazing automatic telescope outside, and we got to look through it and see Saturn and its rings. It was amazing! We're going to plan on going back this autumn once the main telescope is up and running again.
July 21, 2015
Lizzy had her 4-year old check up today. As always, she's perfectly healthy. She's so smart, and our doctor wanted us to keep pushing and challenging her as we're doing. Her vision is 20/20. She's still above average height (yay!), and he remarked that he's never felt a core in a 4-year old as strong and hers is. She also had better than normal limb rotation. He asked if we have her in gymnastics, and seemed surprised when I said she wasn't. We need to keep her healthy and active!
After her appointment, we headed back home so I could work. After my day was finished, she and I snuck to the pool for an hour while Daddy finished his day.

We had dinner after an hour or so (and she wanted to take pictures of Daddy), and then went back for more fun!

Daddy had a TON of work to catch up on, so Lizzy and I spent several hours shopping for new school clothes. She loves picking out her own attire, and has better fashion sense than I do (not that that is a big stretch, though.)
After shopping, we went home for lunch and then went swimming, as it was a perfectly sunny afternoon. I love spending time with my sweet girl!

Lizzy had to go back to the doctor today for her 4 year old shots (since her prior physician hadn't yet released her records at the time of her checkup a few weeks ago.) She was due for 4 shots, and took them all without crying. What a brave little girl!

We got up early and headed downtown for a Women's Mentoring event that my work was a major sponsor for. It was a relay event at the IUPUI Stadium. Lizzy had a GREAT TIME! She loved running on the Indy Eleven field, running around the track, taking pictures with Mom and Dad, and playing with the games they had set up. Everyone kept saying what a special, beautiful little girl she is!

After we were done at the event, we headed to the Fishers Farmer's Market. While there, she spent some time in the bounce house. As we were walking around, we saw the nearby Tae Kwon Do studio was offering a tremendous special. A private lesson with the Master, a group class, and a uniform for $10. This will be a good way for Lizzy to try something new, and see if she likes it. If not, no commitment.

It's that time of year again! Lizzy had her preschool orientation this year. She got to meet her new 5-year old room teacher, and see her 4-year old room teacher who she will have again this year in the afternoons. All her old teachers she saw could not believe how mature she's gotten over the summer, and how tall she's grown! What a difference a few months makes.
The orientation was great fun. After doing her scavenger hunts in both rooms, she got to get a shaved ice and play on the adventure bus. She's honestly looking forward to school this year, and I'm excited to see how much more she can learn.

We got up waaaaaaaay early (4:15) to watch the Perseid meteor shower. It did not disappoint! She saw five, the Chinese Tiangong Space Station, an iridium flare, and many constellations we don't normally see, since we normally stargaze at night instead of in the early morning hours.
Today was Daddy's birthday, so she picked out a cake for him, Gay and Ed came over, and we had a little party. She made everyone wear party hats, too!

Back to school!
When I walked her back to her class, she hugged me, found her cubby right away for her backpack, told me to make sure to pick her up at the end of the day (as if I'd forget!), and went right over to start playing. After a few second, I snuck a quick camera picture through the peeking window. Not a single tear. It's going to be a great year for her!
The day went great! When I picked her up, she was playing on the floor with the other kids in her afternoon class, happy as could be.
We came home, talked excitedly about her day, and then it was time for her private Tae Kwon Do lesson. She LOVED IT and did so well, listening to the Master and doing some really excellent high kicks. It was so excellent to see her confidently yelling "YES SIR!" to the master. We got her all signed up for a course, since she said she wanted to keep trying it. She could have her yellow belt within a year if she keeps at it. Can you imagine, a 5 year old with a yellow belt? How cute would that be!

A really fun day with her best buddy Kaylee. We went to the pool together, then came back for lunch and Lady & the Tramp in the basement.

Our annual State Fair day! Gay and Ed joined us this time. We rode the train down from Fishers again (which is great fun), ate yummy food, fed animals, played, won another giant ball (that now makes two, including last year's), and had a great time.

Story told to me by Lizzy's preschool owner:
Lizzy was sitting by a little boy at lunch. This boy didn't want to try the cucumbers on his plate, because he said that he doesn't like them. Lizzy told him "You should try them, you might change your mind and like them. My Mommy didn't used to like beer, then she tried it again and now she loves beer."

My birthday was perfect! Had birthday breakfast, then home for presents and a lovely snuggly nap with me and my best girl. After, we took Winston to the Doggy Dip, then home for packing and cleaning the house before our trip. She had so much fun getting her backpack ready full of fun stuff for the flights!

I love that first line: "In a deep, dark night there was deepness." That's pretty scary!

We made it back home! Lizzy and I got up waaaaay too early (thanks jet lag), so after being up for a few hours, we decided to go back to bed at 8:30 and slept until 12:30. That was helpful!
Once we were up, Gay and Ed headed over for a nice visit. Afterwards, the three of us headed to El Rodeo, since Mexican food sounded really good.
Lizzy loves Mexican food, and typically ends up eating a ton of tortilla chips and sour cream. Since she's a growing girl, and we don't do this all the time, we let her do so whenever we go have Mexican. Well, we probably won't any longer. After we had all fallen asleep that night (she was snuggled next to me, as we'd all fallen asleep watching TV) she woke up throwing up sour cream all over our bed. Yikes!
Lesson learned: Not so much sour cream next time.
Fortunately she felt better immediately, so we got the bed cleaned up and went back to sleep.

Colts day! Due to our trip, this was the first chance Lizzy and I had to use our new seats (Daddy had gone to a preseason game one night, so he already had gotten to break them in.) We were so excited! They're a big upgrade from our location last year, and are right in the sun when the roof is open. This is really nice, but did end up being a bit hot since it was 77 degrees. We ended up leaving before overtime started, since we were HOT!
However, the Colts record of winning every home regular season game when Lizzy is in attendance stands at 100%. Maybe they should pay for our season tickets going forward?

She started playing with my phone after halftime, and ended up taking a ton of pictures I didn't know about. Some of the cuter ones are below.

One fun part of the setup was a spiderweb looking net. Gay and Lizzy were coming down the bridge and onto the net. Ed said "I'm walking over to look at the pumpkins."
Lizzy responded "That's no way to leave your ladies, Ed."

Since it's just me and my girl this week, after I picked her up from preschool I figured we'd have a fun Mama and Lizzy night. First, I let her choose anywhere she'd like to eat dinner. She picked Famous Dave's. After, she wanted to go through the car wash, so we did. Then we went to Old Navy and she chose some new "soft pants" (she's going through a phase where jeans are the worst thing ever), and she also chose a scary snake ring that is way too big for her, but I promised her she could wear it on a chain.
Lastly, we went to Perkins for dessert and to see the magician they have on Wednesday nights. She LOVED his tricks! She was all smiles and giggles.
We came home and I let her stay up a little bit late since she wanted to play with Winston. She and him were having a great time together. What a fun night it was!

We went to see Goosebumps the movie today. She wanted to see it in 3-D, so we chose that showing. We decided to upgrade to the DBox seats to make it even scarier. She loved it!

A couple of cute photos from preschool.
After the magician at Perkins last Wednesday, Lizzy noticed another sign in the window that they do face painting on Tuesdays. So, back to Perkins we went for that experience. She had previously made up her mind that she wanted to be a tiger. Rawr!
While in bed reading some new books about outer space, my phone gave us the notification that the International Space Station would be visible in 5 minutes. We had literally JUST been reading about that. How perfect!

The week prior, after the Children's Museum, we had run to the grocery store and I'd given her a dollar to put in the lottery machine to get a scratch off ticket (since she likes using the machine.) She ended up winning $21 on the $1 ticket. So, she got to collect her winnings.
We carved our pumpkins in the evening.

After I picked her up, we took a nap for a few hours, then Daddy woke us up to eat chili for dinner and go Trick or Treating. She wanted to be a Ghostbuster this year (Venkman, to be precise), so she had asked me to be the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I happily obliged.

Today was a HUGE day for Lizzy. She has been reading words for a long time, writing well for over a year, but today was the day it all profoundly came together. She sat down and read two books, start to finish, out loud, by herself. We were so proud!
Gay and Ed came to take her to lunch and then went to the park.
